What is Freestyle Jeet Kune Do™?

Freestyle Jeet Kune Do™ is the application of Jeet Kune Do principles in an amateur freestyle combat sports setting.

Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do (JKD), Bruce Lee's art, means "the way of the intercepting fist." Early in his career, Lee taught and promoted Chinese gung fu. In the mid-1960s he began to question the rigidity of fixed styles, and in 1967 he named his approach Jeet Kune Do, built on interception: the stop-hit of European fencing, applied to unarmed combat.

As he matured, his views changed further. He came to reject fixed styles altogether, including Wing Chun and the classical forms of Chinese kung fu, and developed a philosophical approach that went beyond styles and traditions: a constant search for efficiency and adaptation.

By the end of his life, his Jeet Kune Do included techniques he found useful from Wing Chun (such as trapping), Western boxing, fencing, savate and other kicking arts, Thai boxing (knees and elbows), and the grappling of wrestling, judo and jujitsu, including takedowns, chokes, joint locks and leg locks. His personal notes, published after his death as the Tao of Jeet Kune Do (1975), include studies of all of these. Separately, he trained some Filipino stick fighting with his student Dan Inosanto, which can be seen in Game of Death. Lee cross-trained throughout his life and kept adding to and refining his approach, guided by principles we summarize as:

He encouraged his students not to limit themselves to any style, including his own, but to research their own experience. The JKD emblem expresses this: "using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation."

Freestyle JKD applies these principles and gives them a place to be tested in sport.

Freestyle

Freestyle means every range and every style: striking, clinch and grappling in one contest, open to athletes of every martial art and combat sport. The rules are kept to the minimum needed to prevent serious injury, preserving the totality of combat.

Amateur

The word amateur comes from the Latin amator, "lover". In its original sense an amateur is someone who takes part for the love of the art. Freestyle JKD is founded on that idea: we train and compete for the love of martial arts, for character, and for friendship.

Not a new style

Freestyle JKD is not a new version of Jeet Kune Do. It is a setting, a way of training and competing, where Jeet Kune Do practitioners and martial artists from every background can meet, test their skill and learn from one another.
